How to Prepare Your Essex Garden for Winter

As autumn arrives across Essex, there are a number of important tasks to complete in your garden before the cold sets in. Getting ahead now will make a big difference to how your garden looks come spring.

Lawn Care

Give your lawn a final cut in late October, slightly higher than usual. Remove leaves regularly — they block light and can cause moss and disease. Aerate any compacted areas with a fork or aerator.

Pruning

Late autumn is the ideal time to prune roses, deciduous shrubs and fruit trees. Remove dead or diseased wood first, then shape as required.
